The unexamined life is not worth living, or is it?

Introduction
I always loved stories. it’s been a mental model that plays at least several roles; a method to process trauma, to comprehend the unknown and the perplexing, to defrag the jumbled up information, a heuristic to predict the future, a way to remember, to forget, to learn, to structure, to create and to meditate. One of the oldest stories I remember goes like this:
A delivery guy is walking on a bridge, having a little in his hands. fearing the height and developing worst-case scenarios in his head, he decides to move the cookie to his backpack so it won’t fall down from the bridge. as he starts opening up his backpack, the box slips from his fingers and falls into the river.
